Supplemental Cole Porter: Again with LA REVUE DES AMBASSADEURS

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! In this month’s entry, I’m sharing — for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest — two audios of Cole Porter’s 1928 score for La Revue des Ambassadeurs (“The Ambassador Revue”), which opened 90 years ago this month! We first discussed it here back in 2015. If you’ll remember from that post, I opted not to share an audio of the one-night only 2014 New York concert production — using the recently rediscovered orchestrations — because a professional CD release was allegedly in the offing… But, nearly four years later, it seems that plan has fallen by the wayside. So, for those subscribers who are interested, I am offering my live audio now. Here’s an excerpt.

Also, for subscribers, I’m offering the 2013 radio broadcast of the Parisian concert production. It doesn’t use the original orchestrations (because this was before they were discovered), but it’s better sound quality. Here’s a sample.

The more Cole Porter, the better, right? So, comment below and let me know of your interest!

Come back next month for another Musical Theatre Monday! And tune in tomorrow for more Mad About You!

  1. Thanks for sharing this. I remember in 2015 when you mentioned it. Its taken a while but I know that it will be worth it. I am anxious to hear it Thanks Bob K.

  2. Jackson, I’m interested in hearing the 2 recordings of this little known Porter revue. Thanks for sharing these recordings with us.

  3. Jackson,
I cannot thank you enough for these Cole Porter recordings. I would really appreciate it if you would send me both of these versions of La Revue des Ambassadurs.

  4. Good morning, Jackson! My favorite time of the month is Musical Theatre Monday!
Any Cole Porter I haven’t heard is a treat for me, please Send! Thanks for all your hard work!

  5. This sounds awesome! Could you send them to me, please? Also, if anyone has a link to the 2015 post–I can’t seem to find it. Thanks!

    • Hi, Nate! Thanks for reading and commenting.

I have emailed you at your gmail address.

Also, you can find a link to the 2015 post in this entry’s opening paragraph!

  6. These are two really interesting recordings. According to the Porter in Order website, the revue contains 18 new Cole Porter songs, 2 of which were written for other shows and both recordings include all of these songs while the New York version contains another, an instrumental version of Rippling Stream, the words for which are lost. The New York recording contains the original instrumentation which, I understand, was only found after the Paris concert; however, the sound is not good and, if one wants to hear the words, then the French version is preferable. Being a revue, the songs are not in the same order and both contain several other songs, not all of which are by Cole Porter. I must thank Jackson once again for providing these recordings, they are essential for the Porter afficionado.

  7. Hi, Jackson! I’m a bit late chiming in here, but I’d love to hear these recordings! Thanks for bringing more rediscovered Cole Porter our way.

    • Hi, Scott! Thanks for reading and commenting.

I have emailed you at your earthlink address.

  8. Hi Jackson,. Thanks for all these wonderful recordings, I must admit I enjoyed these ones very much. I am a great Cole Porter fan and I hate to be a nuisance but I have been scouring your archives and there are some shows I would really love to have if it is not too much trouble. These are,

Let’s Face It (both versions) 13th January 2014
Around the World 15th June 2015
The Gay Divorce (BBC radio broadcast) 1st June 2015 &
The New Yorkers (both versions) 15th May 2017.

Once again, I apologise if this is too much trouble, but I have most of the commercially available recordings of his shows and I would really love to have these to make my collection as complete as possible.

    Many thanks,

    John Giles

    • John, I have emailed you at your gmail address.

Also, for future reference and to all who may be reading, please direct each request to the individual post where an item is offered. All the comment sections are still open, and it’s easier for me to keep track of what you’re seeking when your reply corresponds exactly. (Also, the site gets a better understanding of what posts get the most traffic, so it can target its ads better.)

  9. Going back wards through your archives, I am finding music that further intrigues me so that I want to hear it. If you still are offering Cole Porter’s The Ambassador, I will appreciate receiving the audio.

    Thank you.

  10. Hey Jackson: My name is Howard Green and I live in Los Angeles and have worked for Disney for almost 44 years. I also happen to be a huge Cole Porter fan. I have the 2013 recording of “La Revue” but didn’t know about the 2014 version until recently. Any chance you might share your audio of that show with me (pretty please). I’d be happy to share the audio recording of Porter’s “Around the World” from a few years back, if you would like. Some good Porter rarities there. I also love the Andy Griffith show (and know Margaret Kerry, one of the last surviving cast members). Many thanks, Howard

    • Hi, Howard! Thanks for reading and commenting.
