Wednesday In The Park With Steve

Welcome to a new Wildcard Wednesday! This week, we’re honoring Stephen Sondheim’s 91st birthday with a bonus Musical Theatre Monday where I’m offering — for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest — access to several rare audios of one of my favorite masterworks, Sunday In The Park With George (1984).

Included in this lot is an audio boot of the Original Broadway Production with Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters from September 1984, along with a July 1983 recording of the show’s initial workshop at Playwrights Horizon (which, incidentally, also included the likes of Kelsey Grammer and Christine Baranski). From the latter, here’s “Sunday.”

I’ll also throw in an audio from the 2002 Kennedy Center production with Raúl Esparza and Melissa Errico, and from the 2004 Ravinia Festival concert with Michael Cerveris and Audra McDonald (and Patti LuPone). Here’s the title song from Ravinia.

Come back next week for another Wildcard! And stay tuned Tuesday for more sitcom fun!

  1. I’d LOVE to hear more of this! In my acting days, I can brag that I was on the ONLY tour of SITPWG ever done (to this day!), in 1993-94. There was a reason the show never toured aside from that one- while playing through the south, we’d go out at intermission for a cigarette and wave goodbye to a good part of the audience.

  2. What a beautiful show! I listened to the OBC yesterday in honor of Mr. Sondheim’s birthday. I’d love to hear more.

  3. if it is not too much trouble, could you add me to the list of your readers requesting the zip file of the Sunday In The Park with George audio

    Thanks

  4. Some of the most beautiful music ever written for any Broadway show. When Broadway performers gathered in Times Square recently to perform “Sunday” wearing face shields and determination, I wept but began, too, to have hope that we’ll push through to the other side of this pandemic. I’d love to hear more.

  5. Stephen Sondheim! Yes please send the links for the audios. I have seen our ACT production and it was a treat to hear and see as well as the TV program for “Sunday in the Park” so it be great to hear the original production snd hear other interpretation by others. Thanks so much.

  6. One of my all time favorites, and my late husband’s favorite show, too. (His name was George!) We watched the OBC Video again and again. Can’t wait to hear these recordings. Thank You, Jackson!

  7. Now Sitpwg is definitely in my top three favourite Sondheim musicals, i’d really enjoy hearing it again in, at least for me, new recordings. Many thanks.
