Funny Guy

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month, we’re celebrating the 100th anniversary of Bob Merrill’s birth with a rare December 1965 audio — for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest — of Barbra Streisand’s final performance in the original Broadway production of Funny Girl (1964), the classic Fanny Brice musical with a soaring score by Jule Style and memorable lyrics by the birthday boy himself.

Here’s an excerpt from that audio, the iconic “Don’t Rain On My Parade.”

Oh, and since we all love this musical that makes us dance, I’ll also throw in the July 1967 closing night audio, starring Mimi Hines. Here’s a clip, in honor of the masterful Merrill.

Come back next month for another musical theatre rarity! And stay tuned for more Barney Miller!

  1. Hi Jackson
Only saw Barbara Streisand do “Funny Girl” in the movies so it will be a treat to hear her perform it live. Please send the links to both as I like to hear the different interpretation of musicals. I saw a touring production of it years ago with another actress and often wish one could have a record of the show just seen especially if the
    show was done well.
    Thank you.

  2. Dear Jackson: I’d love to have the audio. And thanks, as always, for your endlessly fascinating blog. Best regards, David Kalodner

  3. Wonderful Show, Wonderful Stars, What’s not to Like? Please send and a big hug and thank you for all the wonderful recordings you’ve added to my collection!
