Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month marks the 130th anniversary of Cole Porter’s birth, and to celebrate, I’m offering — for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest — three audios from one of his greatest lesser-known scores: Nymph Errant, which opened in London with Gertrude Lawrence in 1933.

The show’s American debut didn’t occur until 49 years later, when it was produced in 1982 at the Equity Library Theatre. Now’s your chance to hear that production, courtesy of a complete audio. Here’s an excerpt — Kathleen Mahoney-Bennett with the classic “The Physician.”

The other two audios I have come from the 1989 Shaw Festival production and the 1999 Chichester Festival Production. From the latter, here’s Marilyn Cutts and the girls with “Experiment” — presented in honor of the great Cole Porter. Enjoy!

  13. I worked on a production of Kiss Me Kate when I was 14 years old, and that started a lifetime of love for Cole Porter. Nymph Errant is indeed lesser known, even to me, except for the song The Physician, which I know from Julie Andrews’ hilarious rendition in “Star!” Please send!
