Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month, we’re celebrating the 110th anniversary of Ginger Rogers’ birth with an audio — which I’m offering for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest — from her run in the original Broadway production of Hello, Dolly! It’s a lot of fun — a rare treat for fans of this Jerry Herman classic.

Rogers was the first official replacement for Carol Channing, playing the role in New York from August 1965 to February 1967. This particular audio, which is untracked outside of Dolly’s numbers that I clipped out myself, was taken near the end of her tenure, and it features a few key replacements (including The Bob Newhart Show’s Pat Finley, then going by “Patte Finley,” as Irene Molloy). Here’s an ever-so-slight taste: the finale, with Rogers and David Burns.

  2. Wow! I’d love to hear more of Ginger’s performance. As it happens, I enjoyed Pearl Bailey’s turn in the role last night when, for the first time, I listed to her cast album while doing some painting. She, like the others, really made the part their own.

  6. A Rare find indeed, Jackson! You’re amazing! Dolly was my last appearance on stage. It was during the holiday season of 1989 at the Mark Two Dinner Theater in Orlando, Florida. I was back in the chorus and playing various character roles, the Judge being one, and the Chef who tells Rudy that Dolly is here! I also had the pleasure of working with Norm Lewis (Porgy in the recent revival of Porgy and Bess) who was in the Chorus and played one of the incredible waiters. Yes, he can dance, too! Please send Dolly home to me, I know I’ll shed a few tears listening to it! Thank You Once Again!

  10. What I would give to hear her in full as the quintessential female role on Broadway, Dolly Levi! I would be eternally grateful to have a listen!

    I still remember the first time I ever witnessed the brilliance of Ms Rogers- it was a telecast of her “Gold Diggers of 1933” and from then on I was HOOKED! Similarly I am thrilled to have come across your site. Spending the evening reading your posts has been a real treasure. Thank you!
