Frasier & Maryann (& Doogie & Sondheim)

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month, in celebration of the great Christine Baranski — currently enlivening our Sitcom Tuesday coverage of Cybill — I thought it’d be fun to feature a rarity starring the great stage diva. It’s an audio recording from the 1999 Los Angeles Reprise! production of Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd — offered here to subscribers who comment below to alert me of their private, non-commercial interest.

Baranski provides a delectable take on Mrs. Lovett, alongside Frasier’s own Kelsey Grammer in the title role. Although Grammer is not as vocally strong as he should be, it’s fun to hear these two TV stars (who, incidentally, had not only appeared together on Frasier, but also in the 1983 workshop production of Sunday In The Park With George) tackle an iconic piece of musical theatre, and with a cast that also includes Davis Gaines, Melissa Manchester, Ken Howard, and Doogie Howser’s Neil Patrick Harris. Here’s Baranski and Grammer with “A Little Priest.”

Also, if you haven’t shared your opinions yet in our annual survey, please do so now — it’ll close this Wednesday (March 22)! https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/H6VH65Z

Come back next month for another musical rarity! And stay tuned tomorrow for more Cybill!

  1. Hi Jackson
Having seen Angela Landsbury in a touring production of Sweeny Todd, i like to hear this version. The interpretation by diverse actors is always
    interesting. Please send.

    Thanks so much.
