Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month we’re celebrating the stage adaptation of the 1933 film (and Pre-Code Essential), 42nd Street, which opened on Broadway 40 years ago this past August. A quintessential backstager, its score is comprised of songs written by Harry Warren and Al Dubin, whose tunestack is filled with hits from the Great American Songbook.
So, for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest, I’ve got access to two rare audios of this gem-filled score — both taken from the original 1980 production. The first is from the August 25, 1980 Opening Night performance (which includes the curtain call announcement of Gower Champion’s untimely passing). Here’s “Lullaby Of Broadway.”
And the other is from the D.C. tryout in June. Here’s “Shuffle Off To Buffalo.”

Heard of these musical, but never seen it
The musical I want to see the most right now is Hadestown. It is coming to Charlotte October of 2021- there might be an advantage there. I just hope 20210 doesn’t have zero musicals

It is so hard waiting- feels like forever in the US.
I really want to see Hadestown next year. If it is coming in October, there might be some advantage. Blumenthal Performing Arts means a lot to me- I rely on them to see musicals.
I remember the night that Gower Champion’s death was announced. I was in a production of “Man of La Mancha” at the time, and we observed a moment of silence at curtain call. I guess it must have been the following night. Nobody in the cast of 42nd Street knew about it until the announcement was made. I look forward to hearing these recordings, please send.

Although the Broadway production was a “mash-up” of several Busby Berkeley film musicals of the 1930s (of which “42nd Street” has always been my hands-down FAVORITE), I DO appreciate the stage version(s). BTW ~ “What do you hope for/Go to see a show for?”?? Why…”those BEAUTIFUL DAMES”, of COURSE!
