Lucy’s Notebook

Welcome to a new Wildcard Wednesday! Today, I’m paying my annual homage to Lucille Ball, who was born 113 years ago this week. In celebration of this formative sitcom stalwart, I want to share something fun and kitschy — a booklet called “Lucy’s Notebook” that was put out in late 1954 and early 1955 with purchases of Philip Morris cigarettes (I Love Lucy’s sponsor).

It’s basically a collection of recipes, but with essays written in the voice of Lucy Ricardo, making it a collectible treat for fans of television’s first great sitcom. Now, it’s unclear who actually wrote “Lucy’s Notebook” — it almost certainly wasn’t I Love Lucy’s actual scribes — but it’s a testament to their work, and Ball’s, that such a character-based endeavor is even possible. So, here it is — enjoy! (And let me know if you ever choose to make one of these recipes!)

Come back next week for a new Wildcard! And stay tuned Tuesday for more sitcom fun!
