Georgette, Gershwin

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month, we’re celebrating the 125th birthday anniversary of George Gershwin, who was born on September 26, 1898. We’ve featured so many of his genius contributions to the musical stage (and the Great American Songbook) over these last ten years, but I never get tired of bringing out new rarities to share here with you — subscribers who comment below to alert me of your private, non-commercial interest.

So, I’m offering a songs-only audio of a 1979 production of Tip-Toes (1925), put on by Goodspeed Opera at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The cast includes Georgia Engel (post-Mary Tyler Moore), along with Russ Thacker, Jana Robbins, and Bob Gunton. It’s not great quality, but it’s utterly delightful to hear Engel coo her way through beautiful ditties like “Looking For A Boy.” Here’s a sample — Thacker and Engel with “That Certain Feeling.”

Come back next month for another musical rarity! And stay tuned for more Malcolm!
