Dame In The Dark

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! October is Angela Lansbury month — she turned 95 on the 16th — so for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest, I’m offering access to a rare audio of something fun: a one-night only November 1969 tribute to the music of Kurt Weill, featuring Lotte Lenya, Nancy Dussault, Jack Gilford, Richard Kiley, Mabel Mercer, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (among others), with the entire second act consisting of a Lady In The Dark (1941) concert starring Lansbury in the Gertrude Lawrence role.

Lady In The Dark is an essential piece of musical theatre, with indelible numbers by Weill and Ira Gershwin like “The Saga Of Jenny.” As a sample, here’s the birthday girl singing that classic.

Come back next month for another musical rarity! And stay tuned for more Beverly Hillbillies!
