Following XENA: The Anti-Hero (II)

Welcome to another Xena Thursday! Today we’re continuing our last series of posts on this iconic action series, looking at particular themes/arcs/elements through a handful of accompanying installments. My hope is that this can be a resource, like so many of the other entries here, for those who are just beginning their adventure with Xena. Last week we covered the episodes with most action; today we’re looking at the episodes that portray Xena as anti-heroic, engaging in behavior that is not expected (especially in the ’90s television landscape) of heroes. If these types of narrative (now not uncommon) strike your fancy, these are the Xena episodes to watch . . .

2 thoughts on “Following XENA: The Anti-Hero (II)

  1. I LOVED watching Xena with her dark side because it felt so real; there was no random episode which was done to remind audiences this character use to be bad – it was a constant struggle for her, there was no people letting the character off because they said they were good now – Xena’s reputation had the ability to hurt her efforts no matter how much good she did in a town, and there was this oh so lovely element to this arc called consequences which sadly we don’t see characters now days face a lot.

Now days you might have the title character face some backlash in the episode they’re in or maybe the next episode but again consequences to her actions followed Xena for the series and it felt so real which personally made me love the series that much more. The level of detail to do that was grand!

I honestly think her struggles was what helped set her apart from the Hercules series because if she was just a good guy it would basically be female him but because the show embraced consequences for these actions she felt like a more interesting and relatable character.

Lucy played everything so well I have to say I was always excited for dark Xena episodes! I didn’t always support Xena’s choices in those episodes but I always had fun watching her of the character dynamic those moments created. Many props to the writers for always again making it feel real and not out of character or over the top; there’s just so much to love about this series and dark Xena arcs is one of those things.

    • Hi, Aaron! Thanks for reading and commenting.

Indeed. Xena was a complex hero — Lawless described it as “the devil on her shoulder” — and that invited richer stories than HERCULES’.
