Of Thee She Sings!

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month is our annual celebration of Ethel Merman, who was born on January 16, 1908. I’m running out of rarities associated with this diva that I haven’t already shared — but here’s a recent discovery. It’s her performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” from New York mayor John Lindsay’s inauguration on January 01, 1966. It’s a welcome addition to those Merman fans who, like myself, consider themselves completists!

And, in case you haven’t heard this, here’s Merman’s recording of Gypsy’s “Everything’s Coming Up Roses” with special lyrics by Sondheim himself, in support of Lindsay’s 1965 campaign.

As always, happy heavenly birthday, Miss Merman!

Come back next month for another musical rarity! And stay tuned for more sitcom fun!
