Goodbye Trixie, Hello Christine

Welcome to a new Wildcard Wednesday! This week, I’m announcing the results of our most recent survey and paying tribute to the late Joyce Randolph, who passed away earlier this month at the age of 99. Randolph is, of course, best known for playing Trixie from 1951-1957 on The Honeymooners, along with sketches on Cavalcade Of Stars and The Jackie Gleason Show.

First, I want to take this post to announce that, based on your feedback, I have decided to add The New Adventures Of Old Christine to this blog’s roster. 64% of you said you’d like to see it here when directly asked, so I think I’ll slot it in somewhere around How I Met Your Mother. As for Still Standing, 73% voted NO, so I think we’ll leave that one off for the time being. Thanks to everyone who answered the survey — I definitely take your preferences into consideration!

And secondly, in honor of Joyce Randolph and her participation in a television classic, I thought I’d share a relative rarity here with you — it’s a copy of one of the Honeymooners sketches performed on Ed Sullivan’s show and left off the otherwise complete Shout Factory! DVD release. It’s a remake of the earlier “Ring Salesman” routine, initially staged for Cavalcade Of Stars on December 07, 1951 (when Randolph made her debut as Trixie, succeeding Elaine Stritch) and again on March 28, 1952. The company recreated it live — two days later, on March 30, 1952 — for Sullivan’s show. So, here’s this unfamiliar version of a familiar sketch — with a taste of the late Joyce Randolph, still new to the role that would immortalize her.

Come back next week for another Wildcard! And stay tuned Tuesday for more sitcom fun!
