I Love New York, New York

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month, I must confess I’m mourning the closing of Broadway until, well, who knows? But I hope to give some temporary solace by paying tribute to the greatest city in the world with one of those classic scores that I consider synonymous with the Big Apple: Leonard Bernstein’s On The Town, the iconic 1944 musical with book and lyrics by Betty Comden & Adolph Green — revived as recently as 2014.

Well, for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest, I’ve got an audio of the first Broadway revival of the show, from 1971, starring Donna McKechnie, Phyllis Newman, and Tony-nominated Bernadette Peters. As an excerpt, here’s the darling “Some Other Time.”

And, heck, ’cause I like y’all, I’ll thrown in another bonus for subscribers — an audio of the 2008 Encores! production. Here’s Justin Bohon, Tony Yazbeck, and Christian Borle with the exhilarating “New York, New York” — let’s hope the “some other time” we catch up is soon!

Come back next month for another musical rarity! And stay tuned for more Andy Griffith!
