You And The Night And The TV

Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month, we’re celebrating Revenge With Music (1934), which first opened in November 1934 and featured a sensuous score by Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz, with classics like “You And The Night And The Music” and “If There Is Someone Lovelier Than You” (two of my favorites).

Those two gems are part of a rare treat I’m sharing below: a songs-only audio recording of the rare 1951 TV adaptation of the show, which was broadcast on NBC’s elusive Musical Comedy Time series on February 19, 1951, with Anne Jeffreys, John Raitt, Audrey Christie, Billy Gilbert, and Vincente Gómez. It’s only 28 minutes all told, but for fans of this score, I know you’ll enjoy it, as it includes the aforementioned songs, along with “Flamenco,” “Maria,” “Wand’ring Heart,” “In The Noonday Sun,” “Never Marry A Dancer,” and “Two-Faced Woman” (originally written for Flying Colors). Here it is!

Come back next month for a new musical theatre rarity! And stay tuned tomorrow for more Laverne & Shirley!
