Welcome to a new Musical Theatre Monday! This month, we’re celebrating the 70th anniversary of Kismet, which opened on Broadway in December 1953. With a score by Robert Wright & George Forrest, adapted from the works of Alexander Borodin, Kismet has always been a feast for the ears, boasting a dozen haunting, glorious songs.
In honor of this score, I’m sharing — with subscribers who comment below to alert me of their private, non-commercial interest — access to three audio recordings. The first is from the 2006 Encores! production with Brian Stokes Mitchell and Marin Mazzie. Here’s an excerpt.
The second is a full BBC broadcast from 1994; here’s Stephen Hill with “Night Of My Nights.”
And lastly, I’ve also got all the musical numbers from the 1967 TV production that starred Jose Ferrer, Anna Maria Alberghetti, George Chakiris, and Jeannie’s Barbara Eden. Here’s the latter with “Not Since Nineveh” — she’s great! (See a black-and-white copy of the telecast here!)
Come back next month for another musical rarity! And stay tuned tomorrow for more Scrubs!
