Welcome to this month’s Musical Theatre Monday! I have a wonderful treat for subscribers who comment below to alert me of their interest (and, as always, have no commercial designs on this material). It’s an audio from the 2005 Musicals Tonight! production of Good News! — covered on this blog way back back in 2014 — that… wait for it… uses the entire original score!

That’s right, free of all the DeSylva-Brown-Henderson interpolations that have made their way into revised productions over the years, this audio only includes — and includes them all — songs that were heard in the original Broadway production of 1927.

Now, you know all the best tunes — “Varsity Drag,” “Just Imagine,” “The Best Things In Life Are Free,” “Lucky In Love,” and the title song — but this is the only place I know where you’ll hear, for example, the original duets for the secondary couple, like “Baby! What?” and “In The Meantime” (heard above), both of which have an amazingly fun and authentic ’20s flair.

And while you subscribers are commenting below (I’ll also throw in a copy of the 1930 film), here are treats for everyone — two rare recordings made by a (kinda) original cast member, Peggy Bernier, who starred as Flo (the “Varsity Drag” girl) in the 1928 Chicago production. Above is Bernier’s aforementioned “Drag” and below is the always jovial “Good News!”
